Understanding the iPod Classic 128GB storage limit

Why some 80GB, thick 160GB, and 120GB models stop near 128GB, how to check the installed version, and when a firmware conversion is actually necessary.

Installing a 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB flash adapter does not guarantee that an iPod will use the full capacity. On certain aluminum iPod Classic logic boards, the standard firmware creates a practical limit near 128GB.

This issue is easy to misunderstand because the 80GB, 120GB, and 160GB labels describe the capacity originally sold—not the maximum capacity after repair. The logic board, installed firmware, and storage hardware all matter.

What the 128GB limit looks like

A limited iPod may restore while recognizing only about 128GB of a larger card, or it may behave unpredictably when a build attempts to address capacity beyond the firmware’s range. Reformatting the card, changing a back plate, or installing a larger battery does not change the firmware limit.

The practical solution is not to keep repeating restores. First identify the model and firmware, then match the storage plan to what the logic board can support.

How to check the installed firmware

  1. Start the iPod normally.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose About.
  4. Scroll until the software version appears.

Exterior engravings are not enough. Replacement backs are common, and a modified iPod may contain a different logic board or firmware than its case suggests. If the iPod cannot boot, MRG Studio can confirm the relevant details during inspection.

When version 2.0.4 is required

Version 2.0.5 is associated with the Late 2009 thin 160GB 7th-generation model. That model already supports storage above 128GB and does not need the 2.0.4 conversion.

MRG Studio does not install version 2.0.5 on the affected 80GB or 120GB models because attempting to use it with the established conversion method can cause problems. Those models use version 2.0.4. If their installed firmware is unknown, the builder flags the configuration for review instead of assuming the $40 service is required.

What the conversion does not change

The firmware conversion does not turn an earlier logic board into later hardware. A converted 6th-generation 80GB or thick 160GB board does not gain inline headphone-control support. The 120GB 6.5-generation board already supports inline controls before conversion.
